캐리비언의 자마이카는 그 경치의 아름다움과는 달리 슬픈 역사를 가진 곳이다. Harry Belafonte는 뉴욕에서 태어났지만, 자마이카 노동자 출신 부모를 둔 덕에 그 한과 아픔을 고루 느낄줄 아는, 노동요를 잘 부를 줄 아는 가수이다. 칼립소의 제왕이라는 이름으로도 불리웠지만, 재즈풍의 노래도 너무나 멋지게 부르는 정말 대단한 가수.

이 곡 자체는 그리 큰 의미를 가지지는 않지만, 언제나 자마이카를 잊지 않는 마음을 담은 곡. 그가 Day oh! 라는 하루종일 바나나를 따는 노동자들의 노동요를 구성지게 부르는 걸 들으면 그저 눈물이 난다.

이곡은 Brothers Four 가 편곡하여 부른곡을 따라 부른것에 지나지 않지만, Harry Belafonte의 원곡을 들어보는것도 좋을것 같다. 칼립소의 경쾌함에 실었지만 Day Oh!의 여운이 남아서인지 나에겐 슬프게 들린다.

자마이카에 꼭 레게만 있는건 아니라는 거....
