Scarborough Fair는 아름다운 기타와 절묘한 화음으로 단순한 사랑노래처럼 들리지만, 자세히 들어보면 전쟁을 반대하는 의미를 담고 있다. 원 가사는 그저 단순한 일상을 쫒아가는 가사로 이 가사만으로는 전쟁과 연관시키기 어렵지만, 뒤에 따라오는 화음의 가사가 처연한 전쟁의 서사를 이야기하며 전체적으로 흐르는 목가적인 가사와 묘한 대비를 이룬다. 그런 선명한 대비가 있기에 이야기하고자 하는 바가 훨씬 더 부각이 되는듯 하다. 오히려 처음부터 끝까지 "전쟁 반대" 를 외치는 구호와는 태생적으로 차별되는 정말 대단한 곡이다.

이 노래에는 엄청난 추억이 있다. 고등학교때, 뭐 지금으로부터 20년도 훨씬 넘은 그 시절, 음악선생님이 기악시험을 본다는 공고를 내었다. 그때는 솔직히 기타를 그리 잘 하지 못했기에 은근히 걱정이 되었다. 작은 곡을 하나 연습하고는, 클래식기타를 하던 병훈이란 친구와 일렉기타가 일품이던 욱이라는 친구에게 빌붙어 (?) 간단히 클래식으로 편곡된 Scarborough Fair를 연주하여 선생님으로부터 극찬을 받았다. 물론, 나는 별로 한게 없으나 감사히 A를 받고....ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

사실 그 뒤로는 몇년간 기타를 좀 심하게 연습하게된 계기가 되었고, 한동안 호구지책이 되기도 하였으니 고마운 일이되겠지만, 당시에는 좀 부끄럽기도 했다. 그 친구중 욱이란 친구는 아마 이곳을 조금 기웃거릴것이다.

욱아! 생각나냐? 우리 젊은 시절? ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

개인적으로는 오랜만에 다채널 녹음을 하여 결과가 그리 나쁘지 않아 만족스럽다. 그 보다는 다시는 이곡 하기싫다.
