어린시절의 추억은 항상 아름다운 법이다. 게다가, 특정 상황에 처해있다면 그 아름다움은 아름다움 이상으로 다가올것 같다. 비록 누렇게 바랜 잡초더미였을지라도 푸른 잔디로 추억할수도 있을터. 실제로는 아주 못생겼을지라도 내 마음에는 체리처럼 반짝이는 입술을 가진 메리로 남아있으니 마법의 성형수술같은 것일지도 모른다.

주인공은 감옥에 갇혀 낮잠속에서도 고향의 푸른잔디를 본다. 나쁜일로 감옥에 갔겠지만, 고향을 꿈꿀때 만큼은 어린시절의 꾸밈없는 시절로 돌아가니 고향은 마음을 순화하여주는 작용도 함께 한다고 보여진다.
